Job Purpose:

 

The Entry Level Relay Technician is tasked with executing electrical testing on relays within electrical power stations. In this role, as an entry-level professional, you will be trained to use specialized equipment, including the Doble 6150, to conduct tests on various types of microprocessor relays located inside electrical substations. This position offers an opportunity for hands-on learning and skill development in the field of relay testing and maintenance within the electrical power industry.

Responsibilities

EPS is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Entry Level Relay Technician. In this role, you will be provided with extensive training to learn and perform a variety of tasks related to relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance within electric power systems. Assist in Function Testing:

  • Learn to perform function testing of substation control circuits on relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Gain hands-on experience in ensuring the proper functionality of substation components under supervision.

Develop Relay Macros and Testing Routines:

  • Collaborate with experienced technicians to develop relay macros and testing routines.
  • Confirm proper protection and control design in accordance with industry standards.

Contribute to End-to-End Relay Testing:

  • Learn to perform end-to-end relay testing using relay test software.
  • Analyze relay operation based on fault type runs, under the guidance of senior technicians.

Assist in Procedure Development:

  • Contribute to the development of written standard commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for protective relaying.
  • Participate in the creation of written test procedures for transmission, generation, and distribution substation protection.

Examine Relay Settings and Logic Equations:

  • Work with the team to examine relay settings and logic equations.
  • Confirm system operation in accordance with design specifications.

Develop Isolation Restoration Procedures:

  • Assist in the development of isolation restoration procedures for construction outages.
  • Learn to address and manage electrical issues during construction projects.

Participate in Safety Briefings:

  • Observe and participate in safety briefings on job sites.
  • Follow safety protocols under the guidance of experienced technicians.

Contribute to Investigations:

  • Support investigations of electrical-related issues, including root cause analysis.
  • Learn problem-solving skills to address issues as they arise.

Calibrate and Perform Functional Tests:

  • Gain hands-on experience in calibrating and performing functional tests on both electromechanical and microprocessor-based protective relays for substations.

Project Coordination:

  • Learn to function as an on-site lead for projects, assisting in task assignments and prioritizing activities.
  • Interface with customers under the guidance of senior technicians.

Read and Understand Schematics:

  • Develop the ability to read and fully understand protection and control schematic diagrams and wiring diagrams.
  • Identify and report mistakes and problems in drawings and designs according to accepted engineering and customer standards.

Customer Requirements and Deliverables:

  • Learn to determine and interpret customer requirements.
  • Contribute to providing final deliverables, including as-built prints and test results meeting specified requirements.

Understand Manufacturers' Literature:

  • Familiarize yourself with manufacturers' literature to facilitate testing activities.

Review and Verify Relay Settings:

  • Participate in the review of relay settings to ensure they match the design on schematics and comply with customer standards.
  • Verify correct CT Ratios and trip outputs.

Qualifications

 

Required:

  • Hands on experience installing, maintaining, testing & repairing protective relays in transmission, generation or distribution level substations.
  • Capable of trouble shooting distribution and transmission controls circuits.
  • Knowledge of relay test software.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Complete a satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Able to work overtime and travel out of town for periods of time.
  • Able to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, able to lift 70 lbs.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and currently have and be able to maintain a good driving record.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • NETA certified a plus.
  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical/Electrical technology, or Military experience.
  • Experience installing, maintaining, testing, or repairing circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment
