Job Purpose:

A Principal Engineer will oversee substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US and internationally. They will work and lead multi-disciplined project teams to create industry-leading designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on various projects, including distribution, generation, institutional, industrial, and manufacturing facilities. This position can influence the future of the resiliency and reliability of the electric grid.

Responsibilities

 

  • Planning engineering strategies for a company
  • Managing engineering departments in tasks like research and design
  • Helping determine department goals and creating implementation plans.
  • Providing expert advice to other employees
  • Creating and managing engineering budgets as needed
  • Assisting in the negotiations of contracts with vendors
  • Developing and Implementing process improvements
  • Develop conceptual designs, execution plans, cost estimates, and project schedules for project proposals.
  • Work with customers to develop project and site-specific design scope documents.
  • Guide the Engineering team in the execution of engineering activities such as:
    • Physical substation design, including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material.
    • Protection and control design, including panel arrangements, one lines /single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
    • Calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lightning protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
    • Equipment specifications for procurement and factory acceptance testing
  • Lead the coordination of design activities with other groups (Civil/Structural, SCADA, System Protection, Transmission Line, etc.)
  • Lead process, tools, and technology implementations
  • Develop and provide training to less experienced engineers and team members.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with Engineering Managers and Leads to mentor and help further develop their skills.
  • Perform quality oversight as needed and manage the further development of the quality plan and associated training.
    • Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers as needed.
    • Perform 3rd party quality reviews of designs performed by others.
  • Provide input into employee performance reviews.
  • Provide term short-term field support during construction.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives
  • Participate in industry events or professional technical committees.
  • Carries out special or unique designs requiring unconventional or novel approaches or research.
  • Provide expert advice to other engineers.
  • Conducts research, presents papers, and keeps abreast of technological development in the specialty, keeping engineering management informed of significant new advances.
  • May participate in public meetings and licensing hearings and be an expert witness.
  • Participates in and fosters a work environment of openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
  • Minimum 25 years of related experience
  • Proficiency with the National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and IEEE / ANSI Standard
    • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • The ability to solve complex problems requires adapting and modifying standard approaches, techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Up to 25% travel required.
